The former chapel of Santa Cruz do Charnecão (= Holy Cross of the Big Swamp) was built in 1823 and originated the district of Santa Cruz do Escalvado, established in 1846 in the municipality of Ponte Nova, over 100 km east of the provincial capital Ouro Preto. In May 1856 it ascended to a freguesia and was given an own municipality in December 1948. Escalvado means bald and refers to a prominent mountain in the surroundings.
According to Paula Sobrinho (História Postal de Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, 1997), the local post office was created in April 1882. The sole early cancel found to date, SMG-2835a (Coll. Márcio Protzner) appears unfortunately only in part: we see a double circle with the inscription (…) CRUZ DO ESCALVADO, accompanied by a manuscript Sta. Cruz do Escalvado. The date in the centre does not show the year, the cancel having been applied on an issue of 1894.
Die ehemalige Kapelle von Santa Cruz do Charnecão (= Heiliges Kreuz vom Großen Sumpf) wurde 1823 erbaut und gilt als Ursprung des im Jahre 1846 gegründeten Distrikts von Santa Cruz do Escalvado im Município von Ponte Nova, der über 100 km östlich der Provinzhauptstadt Ouro Preto entfernt lag. Im Mai 1846 stieg er zur Freguesia auf und ist ein eigenständiger Município seit Dezember 1948. Escalvado bedeutet glatzköpfig, und so heißt ein prominenter Berg in der Umgebung.
Laut Paula Sobrinho (História Postal de Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, 1997) gibt es das örtliche Postamt seit April 1882. Der einzige bisher gefundene Stempel der Frühzeit, SMG-2835a (Samml. Márcio Protzner) ist leider nur teilweise zu sehen: ein Doppelkreis mit der Inschrift (…) CRUZ DO ESCALVADO, der vom handgeschriebenen Sta. Cruz do Escalvado begleitet wird. Das Datum in der Mitte zeigt zwar nicht das Jahr, wurde aber auf eine Marke aus 1894 abgestempelt.
