Santa Ephigenia was a locality in the district of Arrasto, municipality of Atalaia, situated on the north bank of the Paraibinha River, round 90 km northwest of the province capital Maceió. Since December 1936 it is a district of the municipality of Capela.
According to Aldo Cardoso (Contribuição para a História dos Correios de Alagoas, Maceió, 1969), the local post office was created in July 1884, but closed ten years later. The creation date can be confirmed by the Rio press:
Two early cancels werde found. SAL-0235a (Coll. José A. Junges) has a green double circle with the inscription S. EPHIGENIA above and (ALAG.) below. The sole found copy was dated 1889 in the centre. SAL-0235b (Coll. José A. Junges) might be already republican, for the sole found copy is dated 1891: a double circle with the inscription S.EPHIGENIA above and (ALAGOAS) below, with date in the centre.
Santa Ephigenia war der Sitz des Distrikts Arrasto, im Município von Atalaia, und lag am Nordufer des Flusses Paraibinha, etwa 90 km nordwestlich der Provinzhauptstadt Maceió entfernt. Seit Dezember 1936 ist es ein Distrikt des Município von Capela.
Laut Aldo Cardoso (Contribuição para a História dos Correios de Alagoas, Maceió, 1969) entstand das örtliche Postamt zwar im Juli 1884, musste aber 10 Jahre später wieder schließen. Der Betriebsbeginn kann durch die Presse aus Rio bestätigt werden:
Zwei frühe Stempel wurden gefunden. SAL-0235a (Samml. José A. Junges) hat einen Doppelkreis mit den Inschriften S. EPHIGENIA oben und (ALAG.) unten. Das einzige vorhandene Exemplar ist grün und trägt ein Datum von 1889 in der Mitte. SAL-0235b (Samml. José A. Junges) könnte bereits republikanisch sein, da das einzige Exemplar 1891 benutzt wurde: ein Doppelkreis mit den Inschriften S.EPHIGENIA oben und (ALAGOAS) unten, dazu Datum in der Mitte.
