The Santa Fé train station was inaugurated in July 1869 by the Estrada de Ferro D. Pedro II, Porto Novo Branch, in the municipality of Mar de Hespanha, on the east bank of the Paraibuna River, almost 300 km south of the province capital Ouro Preto. Although situated in the Minas Gerais province, both railway and mail services were controlled by the Rio province until ca.1888 (agenciaspostais.com.br).
Contrary to most train station histories in Brazil, no locality has developed from Santa Fé. In 1889 the railway was renamed Estrada de Ferro Central do Brasil; in 1911, the rail line was called Linha Auxiliar, and from 1965 until operation end in 1971, it belonged to the Estrada de Ferro Leopoldina. Since December 1953 the station was situated in the recently founded municipality of Chiador. Now the tracks are still there, but the station house has been demolished (estacoesferroviarias.com.br).
According to Paula Sobrinho (História Postal de Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, 1997), the station post office was also created in July 1869. The first cancel, SMG-2840a, was already presented by Paulo Ayres (Catálogo de Carimbos Brasil-Império, S. Paulo, 1937, 1942) under #1487, and was used at least until 1888:
It was followed by SMG-2840b (Coll. José A. Junges): a double circle with the inscription SANTA FE above and the date in the centre. Found within the period 1884-88, sometimes the year indication is missing. The last imperial cancel, SMG-2840c (Coll. Karlheinz Wittig), has a double circle with the inscriptions E. DE S. FÉ above and (MINAS) below. The dates in the centre were found for the period 1889-1902.
Der Bahnhof Santa Fé wurde im Juli 1869 durch die Estrada de Ferro D. Pedro II am Ostufer des Flusses Paraibuna im Município von Mar de Hespanha eingeweiht und lag fast 300km südlich der Provinzhauptstadt Ouro Preto entfernt. Die Porto Novo-Abzweigung lag zwar bereits in Minas Gerais, aber die Kontrolle von Bahn- und Postbetrieb blieb bis ca. 1888 bei der Provinz Rio de Janeiro (agenciaspostais.com.br).
Im Gegensatz zu den meisten anderen Bahnhofsgeschichten Brasiliens ist keine Ortschaft aus Santa Fé entstanden. Die Bahnlinie wurde ab 1889 Estrada de Ferro Central do Brasil umbenannt. Die Abzweigung hieß von 1911 an Linha Auxiliar und gehörte von 1965 bis zum Betriebsende 1971 der Estrada de Ferro Leopoldina. Seit Dezember 1953 stand der Bahnhof im neu gegründeten Município von Chiador. Die Schienen liegen heute immer noch vor, aber das Bahnhaus wurde bereits abgerissen (estacoesferroviarias.com.br).
