Chopotó (also called Xipotó or Jipotó) was an indigenous tribe, now extinct, which has given the name to two rivers in the Minas Gerais province. São Caetano do Chopotó was from July 1857 on a district in the municipality of Piranga, situated on the Chopotó River which flows into the Piranga, round 100 km south of the province capital Ouro Preto. In December 1938 the name was Latinized to Cipotânea, and the district belonged then to Alto Rio Doce. Since 1953 has Cipotânea an own municipality.
Paula Sobrinho writes in his História Postal de Minas Gerais (Belo Horizonte, 1997) the local post office was created in January 1884. The imperial post cancel is SMG-2220a (image from the internet): a double circle with the inscription S. CAETANO DO CHOPOTÓ on top and a small circle below between circles. Dates at the centre between 1884 and 1893.

São Caetano do Chopotó war ab Juli 1857 ein Distrikt im Município von Piranga, der am Chopotó-Fluss lag, der wiederum ein Zufluss des Piranga ist, weniger als 100 km südlich der Provinzhauptstadt Ouro Preto entfernt. Im Dezember 1938 wurde der Ortsname zu Cipotânea latinisiert, und der Distrikt ging zu Alto Rio Doce über. Seit 1953 hat Cipotânea einen eigenen Município.
Paula Sobrinho schreibt in seiner História Postal de Minas Gerais (Belo Horizonte, 1997), das örtliche Postamt ist im Januar 1884 entstanden. Der kaiserliche Poststempel ist SMG-2220a (Abb. aus dem Internet): ein Doppelkreis mit der Inschrift S. CAETANO DO CHOPOTÓ oben und einem kleinen Kreis unten zwischen den großen Kreisen. Die Daten in der Mitte entstammen dem Zeitraum 1884-1893.
