São João Baptista do Retiro do Barranco Alto (= SJB of the Wasteland on the Steep Embankment) was a district of Alfenas, located on the west bank of the Sapucaí River, about 450 km west of the provincial capital Ouro Preto. Since September 1924, the village has been called Barranco Alto. The area was flooded in the 1960s to allow the construction of the Furnas hydroelectric power station. Today, the population is just over 1,100, mainly living from fishing tourism.
According to Paula Sobrinho (História Postal de Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, 1997), there was a post office there since December 1887. Unfortunately, no postmark from the imperial era was seen so far.

São João Baptista do Retiro do Barranco Alto (= SJB des Ödlands an der Steilen Böschung) war ab Dezember 1873 ein Distrikt von Alfenas, der am Westufer des Flusses Sapucaí, rund 450 km westlich der Provinzhauptstadt Ouro Preto entfernt lag. Seit September 1924 trägt der Ort den vereinfachten Namen Barranco Alto. Der Umgebung wurde in den 60er Jahren überflutet, um den Bau des Wasserkraftwerks Furnas zu ermöglichen. Heute beträgt die Bevölkerungszahl gut 1.100 Einwohner, die hauptsächlich vom Angeltourismus leben.
Laut Paula Sobrinho (História Postal de Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, 1997) gab es dort ein Postamt seit Dezember 1887. Leider war bisher kein Poststempel aus der Kaiserzeit zu sehen.
