Another name: São Vicente do Sul (1969)
This old freguesia of Rio Pardo became a district in the Município of São Gabriel in April 1846, which was located close to the Arroio Cunha, 380 km west of the provincial capital Porto Alegre. Thirty years later, the place rose to become a vila, renamed General Vargas in 1944. This general was not the former President Getúlio Vargas, but his father, a military man and politician (1844-1943) who was considered a hero in the war against Paraguay. However, the name was probably not pleasant to the military dictatorship from 1964 onwards, so the place name changed to São Vicente do Sul in 1969.
As Nova Monteiro writes in Administrações e Agencias Postaes do Brasil Imperio (Brasil Filatelico/RJ, 1934-5; Reprint SPP 1994-1999), there has been a post office there since July 1866. An early postmark was found, probably not the earliest. SRS-0380b (Coll. José A. Junges) is a double circle with the inscription S. VICENTE above and an ornament in cross below consisting of four converging arrowheads. The dates in the centre vary from 1885 to 1897.

Diese alte Freguesia von Rio Pardo wurde im April 1846 ein Distrikt im Município von São Gabriel, der nah am Arroio Cunha lag, 380 km westlich der Provinzhauptstadt Porto Alegre entfernt. 30 Jahre später stieg der Ort zur Vila auf, die 1944 zu General Vargas umbenannt wurde. Dieser General war nicht der ehemaliger Präsident Getúlio Vargas, sondern dessen Vater, ein Militär und Politiker (1844-1943), der als Held im Krieg gegen Paraguay gilt. Allerdings war der Name der Militärdiktatur ab 1964 wohl nicht angenehm, so wechselte der Ortsnamen 1969 zu São Vicente do Sul.
Wie Nova Monteiro in Administrações e Agencias Postaes do Brasil Imperio (Brasil Filatelico/RJ, 1934-5; Reprint SPP 1994-1999) schreibt, gibt es dort ein Postamt seit Juli 1866. Ein früher Poststempel wurde gefunden, wohl nicht der früheste. SRS-0380b (Samml. José A. Junges) ist ein Doppelkreis mit der Inschrift S. VICENTE oben und einem Ornament in Kreuz unten, das aus vier konvergierenden Pfeilspitzen besteht. Daten in der Mitte von 1885 bis 1897.
