The word taboleiro (now written tabuleiro) means both plate and (high) plateau in Portuguese. This taboleiro was, from April 1841, a parish called Senhor Bom Jesus da Cana Verde (Our Good Lord Jesus of the Green Sugar Cane), located on the north bank of the Rio Formoso, a tributary of the Rio Pomba, 200 km south of the provincial capital Ouro Preto. In January 1866 it became a district of the municipality of Pomba, and since December 1953 it has been the Município of Tabuleiro.
Both Nova Monteiro (Administrações e Agencias Postaes do Brasil Imperio, in Brasil Filatelico/RJ, 1934-5; Reprint SPP 1994-1999) and Paula Sobrinho (História Postal de Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, 1997) agree that there has been a post office there since March 1864. The only postmark of the imperial period so far is probably not the oldest: TMG-3160b (Coll. José A. Junges) is a double circle with the inscription TABOLEIRO DO POMBA above and an ornament in lozenge below, the four sides of which are open. The internal dates were found for the period 1885-1894.

Das Wort Taboleiro (heute tabuleiro geschrieben) bedeutet auf Portugiesisch sowohl Platte als auch (Hoch)plateau. Dieser Taboleiro war ab April 1841 eine Pfarrei namens Senhor Bom Jesus da Cana Verde (Unser Guter Herr Jesus des Grünen Zuckerrohrs), die am Nordufer des Rio Formoso, eines Zuflusses des Rio Pomba, lag, 200 km südlich der Provinzhauptstadt Ouro Preto entfernt. Im Januar 1866 wurde daraus ein Distrikt der Gemeinde Pomba, und seit Dezember 1953 ist es der Município von Tabuleiro.
Sowohl Nova Monteiro (Administrações e Agencias Postaes do Brasil Imperio, in Brasil Filatelico/RJ, 1934-5; Reprint SPP 1994-1999) als auch Paula Sobrinho (História Postal de Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, 1997), sind sich darüber einig, dass es dort seit März 1864 ein Postamt gibt. Der bisher einzige Poststempel der Kaiserzeit ist wohl nicht der älteste: TMG-3160b (Samml. José A. Junges) ist ein Doppelkreis mit der Inschrift TABOLEIRO DO POMBA oben und einem Ornament in Raute unten, dessen vier Seiten offen sind. Die inneren Daten wurden für den Zeitraum 1885-1894 gefunden.
