Other names: Villa Nova de Santo Antonio, Neópolis (1940)
The freguesia of Villa Nova de Santo Antonio originated as early as October 1678 and was located on the south bank of the mythical São Francisco River, 120 km northeast of the future provincial capital Aracaju. In 1733, the place name changed for the first time, to Villa Nova d’El-Rey, and again three times after the colonial period: in March 1835 to Villa Nova do Rio São Francisco, in November 1910 to the town of Villa Nova, and finally in April 1940 to the present-day Neópolis.
Two years of origin for the local post office were found: first in December 1844, as Nova Monteiro writes in Administrações e Agencias Postaes do Brasil Imperio (Brasil Filatelico/RJ, 1934-5; Reprint SPP 1994-1999). Then again in 1848, as can be read in the Directory of Imperial Post Offices (Tabella das Agencias do Correio do Imperio, Rio de Janeiro, 1885). Unfortunately, no postmark of the imperial period could be assigned to this locality with certainty so far.

Die Freguesia von Villa Nova de Santo Antonio entstand bereits im Oktober 1678 und lag am Südufer des mythischen Flusses São Francisco, 120 km nordöstlich der späteren Provinzhauptstadt Aracaju entfernt. 1733 wechselte der Ortsname erstmals, zu Villa Nova d’El-Rey, und nach der Kolonialzeit wieder dreimal: im März 1835 zu Villa Nova do Rio São Francisco, im November 1910 zur Stadt Villa Nova, schließlich im April 1940 zum heutigen noch aktuellen Neópolis.
Zwei Entstehungsjahre fürs örtliche Postamt wurden gefunden: erstmals im Dezember 1844, wie Nova Monteiro in Administrações e Agencias Postaes do Brasil Imperio (Brasil Filatelico/RJ, 1934-5; Reprint SPP 1994-1999) schreibt. Dann wieder 1848, wie im Verzeichnis der kaiserlichen Postämter (Tabella das Agencias do Correio do Imperio, Rio de Janeiro, 1885) zu lesen ist. Leider konnte bisher kein Poststempel der Kaiserzeit dieser Ortschaft mit Sicherheit zugeordnet werden.
