Volta Grande (do Sapucahy), Minas Gerais (VMG-3325)

Atlas do Imperio do Brasil, 1868

The district of N. Sra. da Conceição da Volta Grande was founded in September 1881 in the município of S. Gonçalo do Sapucahy and was located on the east bank of the Sapucaí River, 400 km southwest of the provincial capital of Ouro Preto. In September 1923, the village changed its name to Careassú and became part of the new município of Santa Rita do Sapucaí. Since December 1953, Careaçu (as it is written today) has been an independent município. The name is of Indian origin and means Big River Curve.

As Paula Sobrinho writes in História Postal de Minas Gerais (Belo Horizonte, 1997), there has been a post office there since January 1889. However, this is said to have started its operation only in the Republic. So far, no postmark from the imperial period has been seen.
