The Freguesia de N. Sra. de Candeias (also spelled Candeas) was founded in January 1866 and belonged to the Vila de Campo Belo, situated 280 km north of the provincial capital Ouro Preto. Since December 1938, the village has been Município de Candeias.
All sources agree that there has been a post office there since November 1881:
