Other names: São Sebastião do Dionísio
Dionysio was originally an arraial of the Freguesia de Sant’Anna do Alfié, which belonged to the Vila de Itabira and was situated on the south bank of the river Mendonça, 170 km north-east of the provincial capital Ouro Preto. In September 1882, the village was elevated to the Freguesia do Santissimo Sacramento do Dionysio, but in March 1890 it was downgraded to a district of the Município de S. Domingos do Prata. In the meantime, the district was called S. Sebastião do Dionísio, and since December 1948 it has been Município de Dionísio. Paula Sobrinho (História Postal de Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, 1997) and R. Koester (Carimbologia XVI) agree that there has been a post office there since November 1884. This is confirmed by the press in Rio:

Im September 1882 wurde der Ort zur Freguesia do Santissimo Sacramento do Dionysio erhoben, aber im März 1890 wurde er zu einem Distrikt des Município de S. Domingos do Prata herabgestuft. Zwischenzeitlich hieß der Distrikt S. Sebastião do Dionísio, seit Dezember 1948 ist er Município de Dionísio.
