The history of the Freguesia de N. Sra. da Ajuda is quickly told: It was founded in 1710 on the eastern tip of Governor’s Island (Ilha do Governador), 25 km north of the city centre of Rio de Janeiro, and has been a quarter of the administrative district (Região Administrativa) of Ilha do Governador since July 1981.
As Paulo Novaes writes in agenciaspostais.com.br, there had been a post office there since June 1875, but it was closed shortly after 1879. No imperial postmarks from this freguesia are known to date.
