Other names: Caroatá
There had been a Fazenda Caroatá on the north bank of the Ipojuca, 90 kilometres west of the later provincial capital of Recife, since 1808. The settlement grew and in May 1857 became the Freguesia de Sant’Anna do Gravatá, which belonged to the Vila de Bezerros. In May 1881 it became a Vila and in June 1884 a town.
Both Nova Monteiro (Administrações e Agencias Postaes do Brasil Imperio, in Brasil Filatelico/RJ, 1934-5; reprint SPP 1994-1999) and R. Koester (Carimbologia XX) agree that there was a post office there from April 1859. This is also confirmed by the regional press:
However, the agency did not start operating until May 1860:

Seit 1808 gab es eine Fazenda Caroatá am Nordufer des Ipojuca, 90 km westlich der späteren Provinzhauptstadt Recife. Die Siedlung wuchs und wurde im Mai 1857 zur Freguesia de Sant’Anna do Gravatá, die zur Vila de Bezerros gehörte. Im Mai 1881 wurde sie zur Vila und im Juni 1884 zur Stadt erhoben.
Sowohl Nova Monteiro (Administrações e Agencias Postaes do Brasil Imperio, in Brasil Filatelico/RJ, 1934-5; Reprint SPP 1994-1999) als auch R. Koester (Carimbologia XX) sind sich einig, dass es dort seit April 1859 ein Postamt gab. Dies wird auch von der regionalen Presse bestätigt:
