The Freguesia de N. Sra. da Apresentação do Irajá, located 20 kilometres northwest of the capital Rio de Janeiro, has existed since February 1647, became a Distrito in 1889 and has been an administrative district (Região Administrativa XIV) of the Município de Rio de Janeiro since March 1962.
According to the Rio press, there had been a post office there since June 1871:
This was closed around 1889, reopened in December 1895 and closed again around 1940, as P. Novaes writes on agenciaspostais.com.br.
The oldest postmark to date is probably not the first, as IMN-0115b (Fig. agenciaspostais.com.br) shows a date of 1895.
