The Freguesia N. Sra do Carmo de Jaboticabal was founded in April 1857 and belonged to the Vila de Araraquara, 350 km north-west of the provincial capital of São Paulo. In July 1867 it became a Vila and in October 1894 a city. Jabuticaba (as it is spelt today) is the fruit of the tree trunk cherry (Plinia cauliflora):
As the regional press reported, there had been a post office there since December 1876:
