From April 1853, Santo Antonio do Juquiá was a freguesia in the Município de Iguape on the Juquiá River, more than 150 kilometres southwest of the provincial capital of São Paulo. In November 1938, its jurisdiction was transferred to Prainha and six years later to Miracatu. It has been the Município de Juquiá since December 1948. The word from the Tupi-guarani language is said to mean dirty water.
As the press in Rio reported, there had been a post office in Juquiá since August 1881:

Im November 1938 wechselte die Zuständigkeit nach Prainha und sechs Jahre später nach Miracatu. Seit Dezember 1948 ist es das Município de Juquiá. Das Wort aus der Sprache der Tupi-guarani soll schmutziges Wasser bedeuten.
