The Guarda (guard post) de Mostardas has been in existence since 1743. It was located between Lake Patos and the Atlantic Ocean, 200 km south of the later provincial capital Porto Alegre. In January 1773, it was subordinated to the vila S. José do Norte as Distrito de São Luiz de Mostardas, and in December 1963, Mostardas became an independent município.
As R. Koester writes in Carimbologia XXVII, there has been a post office there since 1877. The oldest postmark to date is the double circle MRS-0505a (fig. Felipe Piccinini):

Die Guarda (Wachposten) de Mostardas ist seit 1743 überliefert. Sie lag zwischen dem Patos-See und dem Atlantik, 200 km südlich der späteren Provinzhauptstadt Porto Alegre. Im Januar 1773 wurde sie als Distrito de São Luiz de Mostardas der Vila de S. José do Norte untergeordnet und im Dezember 1963 wurde Mostardas ein eigenständiger Município.
