Alternative spelling: Nonoai
The Freguesia de N. Sra. da Luz de Nonohay existed since April 1875. It belonged to the Vila de Palmeira, was located near the southern bank of the Rio Uruguai and 420 km north of the provincial capital Porto Alegre. In July 1931, it became a district of the Municipality of Passo Fundo and in May 1939 it was transferred to the then newly founded Municipality of Sarandi. Since January 1959, Nonoai (in its current spelling) has been an independent municipality. The name is said to commemorate a Kaingang chieftain.
Nova Monteiro writes in ‘Administrações e Agencias Postaes do Brasil Imperio’ (Brasil Filatelico/RJ, 1934–1935; reprinted by SPP, 1994–1999) that there had been a post office there since September 1864. In the beginning, stamps were probably cancelled by hand, as shown in the illustration by philatelist Carlos A. Balata:

A Freguesia de N. Sra. da Luz de Nonohay existia desde abril de 1875. Pertencia à Vila de Palmeira, ficava próxima à margem sul do Rio Uruguai e 420 km ao norte da capital do estado, Porto Alegre. Em julho de 1931, tornou-se um distrito do município de Passo Fundo e, em maio de 1939, passou a fazer parte do então recém-criado município de Sarandi. Desde janeiro de 1959, Nonoai (na grafia atual) é um município independente. O nome é uma homenagem a um chefe da tribo Kaingang.
Nova Monteiro escreve em “Administrações e Agências Postais do Brasil Império” (Brasil Filatélico/RJ, 1934–1935; reimpressão SPP, 1994–1999) que havia uma agência dos correios no local desde setembro de 1864. No início, os selos eram provavelmente carimbados à mão, como mostra a ilustração do filatelista Carlos A. Balata:

Die Freguesia de N. Sra. da Luz de Nonohay bestand seit April 1875. Sie gehörte zur Vila de Palmeira, lag nah am Südufer des Rio Uruguai und 420 km nördlich der Provinzhauptstadt Porto Alegre. Im Juli 1931 wurde sie ein Distrikt des Município de Passo Fundo und wechselte im Mai 1939 zum damals neu gegründeten Município de Sarandi. Seit Januar 1959 ist Nonoai (in der aktuellen Schreibweise) ein eigenständiger Município. Der Name soll an einen Kaingang-Häuptling erinnern.
Nova Monteiro schreibt in „Administrações e Agencias Postaes do Brasil Imperio” (Brasil Filatelico/RJ, 1934–1935; Nachdruck SPP, 1994–1999), dass es dort seit September 1864 ein Postamt gab. Zu Beginn wurden die Briefmarken wohl per Hand entwertet, wie die Abbildung des Philatelisten Carlos A. Balata zeigt:
