Other names: Encruzilhada do Sul (1944)

The Freguesia de Sta. Barbara de Encruzilhada, which had existed since November 1837, belonged to the Vila de Rio Pardo and was located 170 kilometres southwest of the provincial capital Porto Alegre. In July 1849 it was elevated to a Vila and has been Município de Encruzilhada do Sul since December 1944.

R. Koester writes in Carimbologia XVII that there had been a post office there since 1853, which is confirmed by the list of imperial post offices (Tabella das Agencias do Correio do Imperio, Rio de Janeiro, 1885). However, it was probably a reopening, as the Annuario Politico, Historico e Estatistico do Brazil of 1846 already states that the post office in Encruzilhada – presumably built by the Farroupilhas insurgents – was to be retained:

Furthermore, in February 1850, a postal employee for Encruzilhada was presented in the Rio press:

No postmark is known from the early days of the agency. R. Koester (op. cit.) shows two others that were obviously used later:

The latter postmark still needs to be examined more closely to rule out confusion with Encruzilhada from the province of Minas Gerais.

Die seit November 1837 bestehende Freguesia de Sta. Barbara de Encruzilhada gehörte zur Vila de Rio Pardo und lag 170 km südwestlich der Provinzhauptstadt Porto Alegre. Im Juli 1849 wurde sie zur Vila erhoben und ist seit Dezember 1944 Município de Encruzilhada do Sul.

R. Koester schreibt in Carimbologia XVII, dass es dort seit 1853 ein Postamt gab, was durch das Verzeichnis der kaiserlichen Postämter (Tabella das Agencias do Correio do Imperio, Rio de Janeiro, 1885) bestätigt wird. Es dürfte sich aber um eine Wiedereröffnung gehandelt haben, denn bereits im Annuario Politico, Historico e Estatistico do Brazil von 1846 ist zu lesen, dass das Postamt in Encruzilhada – vermutlich von den Aufständischen Farroupilhas errichtet – beibehalten werden sollte:

Außerdem wurde im Februar 1850 in der Presse von Rio ein Postangestellter für Encruzilhada vorgestellt:

Aus der Anfangszeit der Agentur ist kein Poststempel bekannt. R. Koester (op. cit.) zeigt zwei weitere, die offensichtlich später verwendet wurden:

Der letztgenannte Stempel muss noch genauer untersucht werden, um Verwechslungen mit Encruzilhada aus der Provinz Minas Gerais auszuschließen.

Other names: Cataguarino (1894)

From November 1869, Espírito Santo do Empossado (also spelt Empoçado) was a distrito of the Vila de Leopoldina, 200 kilometres south-east of the provincial capital Ouro Preto. The village was elevated to a freguesia in December 1873 and incorporated into the Vila de Cataguazes almost two years later. The new place name Cataguarino has been in force since October 1894.

The local post office has existed since September 1889, as can be seen from the Postal Bulletin (Boletim Postal) of the following month:

No imperial postmarks are yet known from Empossado/MG.

Seit November 1869 war Espírito Santo do Empossado (auch Empoçado geschrieben) ein Distrito der Vila de Leopoldina, 200 km südöstlich der Provinzhauptstadt Ouro Preto. Der Ort wurde im Dezember 1873 zur Freguesia erhoben und knapp zwei Jahre später in die Vila de Cataguazes eingegliedert. Seit Oktober 1894 ist der neue Ortsname Cataguarino in Kraft.

Das örtliche Postamt besteht seit September 1889, wie aus dem Postbulletin (Boletim Postal) des Folgemonats hervorgeht:

Aus Empossado/MG sind bisher keine kaiserlichen Poststempel bekannt.

This village was a settlement on the south bank of the Rio Tefé, where it flows into the Amazon. The word comes from the nheengatu Indian language and means deep. In 1759, it became a vila called Egas (or also Ega), and since June 1859, the place has been the town of Teffé.

There were three years in which the local post office was founded. Nova Monteiro writes March 1829 for it in Administrações e Agencias Postaes do Brasil Imperio (in Brasil Filatelico/RJ, 1934-5; Reprint SPP 1994-1999). The Directory of Imperial Post Offices (Tabella das Agencias do Correio do Imperio, Rio de Janeiro, 1885) lists the postal agency from 1851. Indeed, the agency was operating in 1853:

In a list published in the Provincial President’s Report in August 1888, the Teffé post office is mentioned as created in 1861:

Diese Ortschaft war eine Siedlung am Südufer des Rio Tefé, wo dieser in den Amazonas mündet. Das Wort kommt aus der Nheegatu-Indianersprache und bedeutet tief. 1759 wurde daraus eine Vila, die Egas (oder auch Ega) hieß, und seit Juni 1859 ist der Ort die Stadt Teffé.
