This special issue from the Brazil Task Group (ArGe Brasilien) in the Federation of German Philatelists (BDPh) is the result of an initiative by Dieter Kerkhoff. As a founding member of this group, he has been supporting and promoting our philatelic research for over 50 years. He also contributed articles that shed light on the person and environment of the second Brazilian emperor. In addition, we were able to obtain new research articles on Império philately from our renowned Brazilian colleagues Rogério Dedivitis and Jacques R. Benchimol. To offer a different perspective, I have written about four important figures who, as contemporaries of Dom Pedro, actively shaped the country’s turbulent period between 1841 and 1889. The whole is rounded off by a list of all ArGe Brasilien articles from our research reports that can be linked to Brazil’s second monarchy. We have also drawn up a timeline of the emperor’s life and included a small iconography of this era.
Even though it seems impossible to condense an entire era into a few pages, this task has been a great pleasure. We hope that readers will enjoy it too.

Esta edição especial do Grupo de Trabalho Brasil (ArGe Brasilien) na Federação de Filatelistas Alemães (BDPh) vem de uma iniciativa de Dieter Kerkhoff. Como membro fundador deste grupo, ele apoia e promove nossas pesquisas filatélicas há mais de 50 anos. Ele contribuiu aqui com artigos que destacam a figura e o contexto do segundo imperador brasileiro. Além disso, conseguimos novos artigos de pesquisa sobre a filatelia do Império dos renomados colegas brasileiros Rogério Dedivitis e Jacques R. Benchimol. Para oferecer uma perspectiva diferente, escrevi sobre quatro personalidades importantes que, como contemporâneos de Dom Pedro, participaram ativamente da turbulenta época do país entre 1841 e 1889. Para completar, incluímos uma lista de todos os artigos da ArGe Brasilien de nossos boletins de pesquisa (Forschungsberichte) relacionados à segunda monarquia do Brasil. Finalmente, traçamos uma linha do tempo da vida do imperador e incluímos uma pequena iconografia dessa época.
Embora pareça impossível resumir todo esse período poucas páginas, foi um grande prazer realizar essa tarefa. Esperamos que o leitor também goste.

Dieses Sonderheft der Arbeitsgemeinschaft Brasilien im BDPh geht auf eine Initiative von Dieter Kerkhoff zurück. Als Gründungsmitglied dieser ArGe unterstützt und fördert er seit über 50 Jahren unsere philatelistischen Forschungen. Er hat auch die Beiträge beigesteuert, die die Person und das Umfeld des zweiten brasilianischen Kaisers beleuchten. Darüber hinaus konnten wir neue Forschungsartikel zur Império-Philatelie von den renommierten brasilianischen Kollegen Rogério Dedivitis und Jacques R. Benchimol gewinnen. Um eine andere Perspektive zu bieten, habe ich über vier wichtige Persönlichkeiten geschrieben, die als Zeitgenossen Dom Pedros die bewegte Zeit des Landes zwischen 1841 und 1889 aktiv mitgestalteten. Abgerundet wird das Ganze durch eine Auflistung aller ArGe-Brasilien-Artikel aus unseren Forschungsberichten, die sich mit der zweiten Monarchie Brasiliens verbinden lassen. Zudem haben wir eine Timeline durch die Lebensjahre des Kaisers gezogen und eine kleine Ikonografie dieser Epoche eingefügt.
Auch wenn es unmöglich erscheint, eine ganze Epoche auf wenigen Seiten zu komprimieren, hat diese Aufgabe große Freude gemacht. Möge auch der Leser Freude daran haben.

The updates (additions and corrections) for the volume Carimbologia of 2023 with the imperial postmarks of the provincial administrations and the General Directorate of Post in Rio de Janeiro are presented here.

Reinhold Koester (1911-1994) wanted to complete the project Carimbologia do Brasil Clássico – presenting Brazilian postmarks from 1798 to about 1889 – with the postmarks of the provincial postal administrations and the Post Direction in Rio de Janeiro. The reason for this decision is obvious: he needed time to sift through, evaluate and document the immense amount of material, because systematic basic research hardly existed at that time.
62 years after the project start on the pages of Brasil Filatelico, it is with pride and relief that we can bring the original project to a provisional conclusion. This was possible because today we not only have much better data processing techniques, but also had access to Koester‘s cancel collection (today: José A. Junges Collection) and to studies on postmarks from Rio de Janeiro (Paulo Novaes on agenciaspostais.com.br) and São Paulo (Mário Celso Orsi Jr.), among others. Thanks again for that.
What is new? The explanations of the signs („How to use“) have been omitted this time, and the volume is richer illustrated. Due to the theme, the bibliographical list has become longer.
The end of the project is provisional, as new old cancels will certainly appear and errors will have to be corrected. Therefore, we are already grateful for any additions or corrections reported here. Updates and corrections will be freely available in three languages regularly from the end of 2023 on the following websites:
ArGe Brasilien, the Brazilian philately team at the German Federation of Philatelists (BDPh) was already co-editor of parts XXVIII to XXX (1988-1990) of Carimbologia. Now we are pleased with all collectors to complete Reinhold Koester‘s research project.
Die Carimbologia do Brasil Clássico – ein Projekt zur Erfassung der brasilianischen Poststempel von 1798 bis etwa 1889 – wollte Reinhold Koester (1911-1994) mit den Stempeln der Provinzpostverwaltungen und der Postdirektion in Rio de Janeiro abschließen. Der Grund für diese Entscheidung liegt auf der Hand: Er brauchte Zeit, um die ungeheure Materialfülle zu sichten, auszuwerten und zu dokumentieren, denn systematische Grundlagenforschung gab es damals kaum.
62 Jahre nach Beginn des Projektes auf den Seiten von Brasil Filatelico können wir mit Stolz und Erleichterung das ursprüngliche Projekt zu einem vorläufigen Abschluss bringen. Dies war möglich, weil wir heute nicht nur über wesentlich bessere Datenerfassungstechniken verfügen, sondern auch Zugang zu Koesters Stempelsammlung (heute: Sammlung José A. Junges) und zu Arbeiten über Poststempel u.a. aus Rio de Janeiro (Paulo Novaes auf agenciaspostais.com.br) und São Paulo (Mário Celso Orsi Jr.) hatten. Dafür nochmals herzlichen Dank.
Was ist neu? Auf die Zeichenerklärungen („Zur Benutzung“) wurde diesmal verzichtet, dafür ist das Band mit entsprechenden Bildern versehen. Dem Thema geschuldet sind die bibliographischen Angaben länger geworden.
Das Ende des Projekts ist vorläufig, da sicher neue alte Stempel auftauchen werden und Fehler korrigiert werden müssen. Daher sind wir schon jetzt für jede Ergänzung oder Korrektur dankbar, die hier mitgeteilt wird. Aktualisierungen und Korrekturen zu den einzelnen Postverwaltungen werden ab Ende 2023 regelmäßig in drei Sprachen auf den folgenden Websites frei verfügbar sein:
