The military colony of Alto Uruguay was founded in 1879 and was located on the south bank of the Uruguai River in the Municipio of Palmeira on the border with Argentina, 500 km northwest of the provincial capital Porto Alegre. The place and the time were not chosen by chance: after the Triple Alliance War against Paraguay (1864-1870), it was necessary to secure the external borders in the south and southwest. The village changed as a district to the Municipio of Três Passos in December 1944 and since March 1992 it has been a district in the Município of Tiradentes do Sul.
The local post office was created in June 1881, according to the Rio press:
The imperial postmark is ARS-0010a (Coll. FM): a double circle with the inscription ALTO=URUGUAY above and an ornament in lozenge below formed by four small lozenges. The previous dates in the centre are from the period 1882-1897.
