The word Anajatuba comes from the Tupi language and means many anajás (a palm species). This small settlement in the Itapecuru-Mirim district was located 130 km south of the provincial capital São Luís do Maranhão. The Vila of Santa Maria de Anajatuba was built there in July 1854. In December 1933, the locality was downgraded as a district of Rosário, but regained promotion as an independent município in July 1935.
According to the postal report (Relatorio Postal) for 1887, there had been a post office there since February 1875. So far, no postmark of the imperial period has been found for this locality.

Diese kleine Siedlung in der Gemarkung von Itapecuru-Mirim lag 130 km südlich der Provizhauptstadt São Luís do Maranhão entfernt. Dort wurde im Juli 1854 die Vila von Santa Maria de Anajatuba errichtet. Im Dezember 1933 wurde der Ort als Distrikt von Rosário herabgestuft, erlangte aber im Juli 1935 den Wiederaufstieg als eigenständiger Município.
Wie aus dem Postbericht (Relatorio Postal) für 1887 hervorgeht, gab es dort ein Postamt seit Februar 1875. Bisher wurde kein Poststempel der Kaiserzeit für diese Ortschaft gefunden.
