The word Andarahy is said to be a variant of Andira-y, which means River of Bats in the Tupi language. This was the name of the freguesia founded at the Vila of Santa Izabel do Paraguassu in June 1878, located on the west bank of the river Paraguaçu (as it is written today), 430 km west of the provincial capital Salvador da Bahia. The place was promoted to Vila in July 1884 and is now a town in its own Município.
There has been a post office there since July 1884, as reported by the Rio de Janeiro press:
The oldest postmark so far is ABA-0065a (Coll. Roberto Assef Jr): a double circle with the inscription ANDARAHY above and a five-pointed star below. Two copies are known, both dated 1890 in the centre.
Das Wort Andarahy soll eine Variante von Andira-y, was in der Tupi-Sprache Fluss der Fledermäuse bedeutet. So hieß die Freguesia, die bei der Vila von Santa Izabel do Paraguassu im Juni 1878 gegründet wurde und am Westufer des Flusses Paraguaçu (wie man heute schreibt) lag, 430 km westlich der Provinzhauptstadt Salvador da Bahia entfernt. Der Ort wurde im Juli 1884 eine Vila und ist heute eine Stadt im eigenen Município.

Der bisher älteste Poststempel ist ABA-0065a (Samml. Roberto Assef Jr): ein Doppelkreis mit der Inschrift ANDARAHY oben und einem fünfzackigen Stern unten. Zwei Exemplare sind bekannt, beide 1890 in der Mitte datiert.
