The Freguesia of N. Sra. das Dores de Assaré was founded in December 1850 at the Vila of Saboeiro, 480 km south of the provincial capital Fortaleza. In July 1865, the place was declared a vila in its own município.
The local post office was established in January 1877, according to the regional press:
