This settlement originated around 1854 with the name Capim (Grasses), it was located on the west bank of the river Ipojuca, 190 km west of the provincial capital Recife. In 1881, it became the Arraial of N. Sra. da Conceição do Bello Jardim, belonging to the Vila of Brejo da Madre de Deus. The place became a vila in July 1909 and a town in September 1928.
The local post office was established in July 1882, as reported in the Rio Press:

Diese Siedlung entstand ca. 1854 mit dem Namen Capim (Gräser), sie lag am Westufer des Flusses Ipojuca, 190 km westlich der Provinzhauptstadt Recife entfernt. 1881 wurde daraus der Arraial von N. Sra. da Conceição do Bello Jardim, der der Vila von Brejo da Madre de Deus gehörte. Der Ort wurde im Juli 1909 zu einer Vila und im September 1928 eine Stadt.
