Bonito was an old settlement near the Vila of Victoria de Santo Antão, located 130 km southwest of the provincial capital Recife. It became a vila in April 1839 and a town in July 1895.
Two dates of foundation for the local post office were found. First in March 1829, as Nova Monteiro writes in Administrações e Agencias Postaes do Brasil Imperio (Brasil Filatelico/RJ, 1934-5; Reprint SPP 1994-1999). Then again in 1839, as can be read both in the Directory of Imperial Post Offices (Tabella das Agencias do Correio do Imperio, Rio de Janeiro, 1885) and in the Postal Report (Relatorio Postal) from 1886. Even if the post office was closed in the meantime, its services were still offered locally – probably by volunteers – as the regional press reported:
The only imperial postmark from Bonito so far is the French type BPE-0125b (Fig. Claudio Coelho): a double circle with the inscription BONITO above and the star between brackets below. The dates – so far: 1886 to 1889 – had to be entered by hand by the agent. An earlier handwritten cancellation also comes from Bonito (Coll. José A. Junges):

Zwei Gründungszeitpunkte fürs örtliche Postamt wurden gefunden. Dann wieder 1839, wie sowohl im Verzeichnis der kaiserlichen Postämter (Tabella das Agencias do Correio do Imperio, Rio de Janeiro, 1885) als auch im Postbericht (Relatorio Postal) aus dem Jahr 1886 zu lesen ist. Auch wenn die Post zwischendurch geschlossen war, wurden ihre Dienste dennoch vor Ort angeboten – vielleicht durch ehrenamtliche Mitarbeiter – wie die Regionalpresse berichtete:
Der bisher einzige kaiserliche Poststempel aus Bonito ist der französische Typus BPE-0125b (Abb. Claudio Coelho): ein Doppelkreis mit der Inschrift BONITO oben und dem Stern zwischen Klammern unten. Das Datum – bisher: 1886 bis 1889 – musste vom Agenten per Hand eingetragen werden. Aus Bonito kommt auch eine frühere handschriftliche Entwertung (Samml. José A. Junges):
