The freguesia named Coração de Jesus do Brejo dos Santos was founded in July 1876 and located on the west bank of the Jenipapeiro River in the Município of Porteiras, 500 km south of the provincial capital Fortaleza. This makes it easy to confuse it with the current Brejo dos Santos in the state of Paraíba, which is only 250 km away. Brejo dos Santos, from Ceará, became a vila in August 1890 and a town in December 1938, and has been called Brejo Santo ever since.
The local post office was created in April 1885, as reported in the capital’s press:

Die Freguesia von Coração de Jesus do Brejo dos Santos wurde im Juli 1876 gegründet und lag am Westufer des Flusses Jenipapeiro im Município von Porteiras, 500 km südlich der Provinzhauptstadt Fortaleza entfernt. Dadurch kann man sie leicht mit dem aktuellen Brejo dos Santos im Bundesstaat Paraíba verwechseln, der lediglich 250 km weit entfernt liegt. Der Brejo dos Santos aus Ceará wurde im August 1890 zu einer Vila und im Dezember 1938 zu einer Stadt, die seitdem Brejo Santo heißt.
Das örtliche Postamt wurde im April 1885 ins Leben gerufen, wie die Hauptstadtpresse berichtete:
