Around 1653, the place was an Indian settlement administered by Jesuits on the west bank of the Araticu, 290 kilometres west of the later provincial capital Belém do Pará. In January 1758, it was elevated to the status of a vila and named Freguesia de N. Sra. da Assunção de Oeiras. In March 1865, it was placed under the authority of Vila de Curralinho, but regained its Vila status in October 1868. In November 1922, Oeiras was downgraded again, this time to a district, and in December 1931 came under the administration of the municipality of Portel. In October 1938, Oeiras was elevated to the status of município. This was followed by two changes to the place name: in December 1943 to Araticu and in October 1965 to Oeiras do Pará. The Indian word Araticu means ‘parrot’s tongue’.
It is not yet known exactly when the local post office was established, but it must have been before October 1876, according to the regional press.
To date, no imperial postmark from Oeiras in the province of Pará has been identified.

Por volta de 1653, o local era um assentamento indígena administrado pelos jesuítas na margem oeste do rio Araticu, 290 quilômetros a oeste da futura capital da província, Belém do Pará. Em janeiro de 1758, foi elevada à categoria de vila e nomeada Freguesia de N. Sra. da Assunção de Oeiras. Em março de 1865, esta foi subordinada à Vila de Curralinho, mas em outubro de 1868 recuperou o status de vila. Em novembro de 1922, Oeiras foi novamente rebaixada, desta vez para distrito, passando em dezembro de 1931 sob a administração do município de Portel. Em outubro de 1938, Oeiras foi promovida a município. Seguiram-se duas mudanças no nome da localidade: em dezembro de 1943 para Araticu e em outubro de 1965 para Oeiras do Pará. Im März 1865 wurde diese der Vila de Curralinho unterstellt, erlangte jedoch im Oktober 1868 den Vila-Status wieder. Im November 1922 wurde Oeiras erneut herabgestuft, dieses Mal zum Distrito, und ging damit im Dezember 1931 unter die Verwaltung des Município de Portel. Im Oktober 1938 stieg Oeiras zum Município auf. Danach folgten zwei Änderungen des Ortsnamens: im Dezember 1943 in Araticu und im Oktober 1965 in Oeiras do Pará. Das Indianerwort Araticu bedeutet „Papagaienzunge”.
Wann genau das örtliche Postamt entstand, ist noch nicht bekannt, es muss jedoch vor Oktober 1876 geschehen sein, wie aus der regionalen Presse hervorgeht.
