Penha Longa station was opened in June 1887 by the E.F.D. Pedro II railway company (Porto Novo do Cunha branch). It was located in the municipality of Mar d’Hespanha, 280 kilometres south of the provincial capital, Ouro Preto. The railway line was transferred to E.F. Central do Brasil in 1890 and to E.F. Leopoldina in 1965. From 1975 until its closure in 1997, it belonged to Rede Ferroviária Federal S.A. (estacoesferroviarias.com.br). Today, the tracks are still in place and the now-restored station building houses a centre for arts and crafts.
Since December 1953, the station has been located in the Município de Chiador.

A estação de Penha Longa foi inaugurada em junho de 1887 pela Companhia Ferroviária E.F. D. Pedro II (ramal de Porto Novo do Cunha). Localizava-se no município de Mar d’Hespanha, 280 quilômetros ao sul da capital da província, Ouro Preto. A linha ferroviária passou para a E.F. Central do Brasil em 1890 e para a E.F. Leopoldina em 1965. De 1975 até o fechamento em 1997, pertenceu à Rede Ferroviária Federal S.A. (estacoesferroviarias.com.br). Hoje, os trilhos ainda existem e o prédio da estação, agora restaurado, abriga um centro de artesanato.
Desde dezembro de 1953, a estação está localizada no município de Chiador.
Conforme consta na imprensa do Rio, em outubro de 1887 foi decidida a instalação da agência postal da estação:

Er lag im Município de Mar d’Hespanha, 280 Kilometer südlich der Provinzhauptstadt Ouro Preto. Die Bahnlinie ging 1890 an die E.F. Central do Brasil und 1965 an die E.F. Leopoldina über. Von 1975 bis zur Stilllegung im Jahr 1997 gehörte sie der Rede Ferroviária Federal S.A. (estacoesferroviarias.com.br). Heute sind die Gleise noch vorhanden und das inzwischen restaurierte Bahnhofsgebäude beherbergt ein Zentrum für Kunsthandwerk.
Seit Dezember 1953 befindet sich der Bahnhof im Município de Chiador.
