Alternative spelling: Peripery
The settlement was founded around 1844 on the site of a fazenda of the same name on the eastern bank of the Rio dos Matos, in the area of Vila de Peracuruca, 160 kilometres north-east of the provincial capital, Teresina. In August 1870, it became the Freguesia de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios de Peripery, in June 1874 a Vila, and in July 1910 a town. Since 1944, the spelling Piripiri has been in use.
The local post office was created in early 1878, as Koester writes in Carimbologia XXX and as confirmed by the regional press:

Em agosto de 1870, tornou-se a Freguesia de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios de Peripery, em junho de 1874, a Vila, e em julho de 1910, a cidade. Desde 1944, a grafia Piripiri é a oficial.

Die Siedlung entstand um 1844 aus einer gleichnamigen Fazenda am Ostufer des Rio dos Matos im Gebiet der Vila de Peracuruca, 160 Kilometer nordöstlich der Provinzhauptstadt Teresina. Im August 1870 wurde sie zur Freguesia de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios de Peripery, im Juni 1874 zur Vila und im Juli 1910 zur Stadt. Seit 1944 gilt die Schreibweise Piripiri.
