Santo Ignacio do Pinheiro was since May 1855 a district in the municipality of Guimarães, situated on the west bank of the Pericumã River, some 120 km west of the provincial capital São Luis do Maranhão. The name Pinheiro does not evoke pine trees in this tropical region; it refers rather to the local governor (Capitão-Mor) who had founded the locality. Latter became a villa in own municipality already in September 1856 and is the town of Pinheiro since March 1920.
According to the Postal Report (Relatório Postal) for the year 1886, a post office had been in operation there since February 1875. The appointment of the postmaster was also announced in February of that year, as stated in the provincial governor’s report:

Santo Ignacio do Pinheiro era desde maio de 1855 um distrito do município de Guimarães, situado na margem ocidental do Rio Pericumã, uns 120 km a oeste da capital provincial São Luis do Maranhão. O nome Pinheiro não pretende evocar a árvore de climas mais frios nesta região tropical; antes refere-se ao Capitão-Mor que fundara localidade. Esta tornou-se uma vila emancipada já em setembro de 1856 e é a cidade de Pinheiro desde março de 1920.
De acordo com o Relatório Postal de 1886, havia ali uma agência dos correios desde fevereiro de 1875. O funcionário dos correios também foi mencionado em fevereiro daquele mesmo ano, conforme consta no relatório do presidente da província:

Santo Ignacio do Pinheiro war ab Mai May 1855 ein Distrikt im Município von Guimarães, der am Westufer des Flusses Pericumã lag, etwa 120 km westlich der Provinzhauptstadt São Luis do Maranhão. Der Name Pinheiro soll nicht an Pinienbäume in den Tropen erinnern, eher an den lokalen Oberbefehlshaber (Capitão-Mor), der die Ortschaft gegründet hatte. Letztere wurde eine villa im eigenen Município bereits im September 1856 und nennt sich seit März 1920 die Stadt Pinheiro.
Laut dem Postbericht (Relatorio Postal) für das Jahr 1886 gab es dort seit Februar 1875 ein Postamt. Der Postangestellte wurde ebenfalls im Februar desselben Jahres erwähnt, wie aus dem Bericht des Provinzpräsidenten hervorgeht:
