Porto Cunha Bueno, São Paulo (PSP-0970)

Provincia de São Paulo, 1886

Porto Cunha Bueno, in the province of São Paulo, was one of around eleven short-lived ports operated by the Companhia Paulista de Vias Férreas e Fluviais – then the full name of the railway company – on the Mojiguaçu River. From May 1887, it was authorised to transport passengers, freight and mail from Porto Ferreira station (built in 1880) along the River Mojiguaçu to its confluence with the Rio Pardo at Pontal. Following the acquisition of the railway company Cia. Rio Clarense by Cia. Paulista in 1892, a parallel railway line was developed along the lower Mojiguaçu. This rendered transport by ship unprofitable. Paulista’s shipping operations declined dramatically and were officially discontinued in May 1904.

Porto Cunha Bueno was situated on the southern bank of the Mojiguaçu in the municipality of São Carlos, 280 km north-west of the provincial capital, São Paulo. The site has been located in the Distrito de Santa Eudóxia since December 1912. The post office, which had previously been located in Porto Pulador, was relocated there in March 1888, as reported by the regional press:

Correio Paulistano, 29 March 1888

To date, no imperial postmark from Porto Cunha Bueno has been sighted. If one exists at all, it is likely to be extremely rare.
