Other names: Santo Antonio do Urubu de Baixo
The settlement of Urubu de Baixo (meaning ‘Lower Urubu’ – the vulture was reportedly the former name of the legendary Rio São Francisco) was already known in the early 17th century. It was situated on the south bank of the São Francisco, near the mouth of the Riacho Jacaré – formerly known as Propriá – some 100 kilometres north of what would later become the provincial capital, Aracaju. In 1714, it became the Freguesia de Santo Antonio de Propriá; in 1800, it was designated a Vila; and in February 1866, it was finally granted town status.
According to Nova Monteiro, there was a post office there from December 1844. He writes about this in Administrações e Agências Postaes do Brasil Império (Brasil Filatelico/RJ, 1934–35; reprinted by SPP 1994–1999). This is likely to have been a reopening, as postal services to and from Propriá were already in operation as early as 1840, as reported by the regional press:

Furthermore, hand-dated Bull’s-eye stamps from April and May 1844 are known to exist, as shown by the illustrations from the collection of Silvio A. Canani and the philatelist Felipe Piccinini.

Another record of the establishment of the Propriá postal agency in 1849 is noted in the Directory of Imperial Post Offices (Tabella das Agências do Correio do Império, Rio de Janeiro, 1885). The only 19th-century postmark recorded to date is PSE-0130b (Dieter Kerkhoff collection):

Er schreibt darüber in Administrações e Agencias Postaes do Brasil Imperio (Brasil Filatelico/RJ, 1934–35; Nachdruck SPP 1994-1999).

Dieter Kerkhoff):
