The District of Santo António do Pirangussú had existed since September 1870. It was part of the municipality of Itajubá and was situated on the Piranguçu (a tributary of the Sapucaí), 450 km south-west of the provincial capital, Ouro Preto. In December 1871, the settlement was elevated to the status of a Freguesia, which has been the Município of Piranguçu (in the actual spelling) since March 1962.
Both Paula Sobrinho (História Postal de Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, 1997) and R. Koester (Carimbologia XXXI) agree that a post office had existed there since September 1887. The imperial postmark is PMG-1960a (Fig. Koester, op. cit.):
Desde setembro de 1870 havia o Distrito de Santo Antônio do Pirangussú. Este pertencia à Vila de Itajubá e ficava às margens do Piranguçu (um afluente do Sapucaí), a 450 km a sudoeste da capital provincial, Ouro Preto. Em dezembro de 1871, o local foi elevado a freguesia, que desde março de 1962 é o município autônomo de Piranguçu (na grafia atual).
Tanto Paula Sobrinho (História Postal de Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, 1997) quanto R. Koester (Carimbologia XXXI) concordam que havia uma agência dos correios no local desde setembro de 1887. O carimbo postal imperial é o PMG-1960a (fig. Koester, op. cit.):
Seit September 1870 bestand der Distrito de Santo Antonio do Pirangussú. Dieser gehörte der Vila de Itajubá und lag am Piranguçu (ein Zufluss des Sapucaí), 450 km südwestlich der Provinzhauptstadt Ouro Preto. Im Dezember 1871 wurde der Ort zur Freguesia erhoben, die seit März 1962 ein eigenständiger Município de Piranguçu ist (in der heutigen Schreibweise).
