The parish of Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Piúma was established in May 1883 and belonged to the town of Benevente. It was situated at the mouth of the Piúma River where it flows into the Atlantic Ocean, 100 km south-west of the provincial capital, Vitória. In January 1891, it was elevated to the status of a town, but lost this status in July 1924 and became a district within the municipality of Iconha. Since December 1963, Piúma has once again been an independent municipality. The word originates from the Tupi-Guarani language and means both ‘dark waters’ and ‘river of mosquitoes’.
As reported by the regional press, the first postmaster was appointed in December 1872:

It is only around 1878 that the postmark PES-0120a (Fuad Ferreira Fo collection – P.A. p. 123) is recorded. It also appears in purple and was already illustrated in P. Ayres’ Catálogo de Carimbos Brasil-Império (S. Paulo, 1937, 1942):
A Freguesia de Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Piúma existia desde maio de 1883 e fazia parte da Vila de Benevente. Localizava-se na foz do rio Piúma no Oceano Atlântico, a 100 km a sudoeste da capital provincial, Vitória. Em janeiro de 1891, foi elevada à categoria de Vila, mas perdeu esse status em julho de 1924, passando a ser um Distrito no Município de Iconha. Desde dezembro de 1963, Piúma é novamente um município independente. A palavra tem origem no tupi-guarani e significa tanto “águas escuras” quanto “rio dos mosquitos”.
Conforme noticiado pela imprensa regional, o primeiro funcionário dos correios foi nomeado em dezembro de 1872:

Somente por volta de 1878 é que o carimbo postal PES-0120a (Coleção Fuad Ferreira Fo – P.A. p. 123) foi registrado. Ele também aparece na cor roxa e já foi reproduzido no Catálogo de Carimbos Brasil-Império, de P. Ayres (S. Paulo, 1937, 1942):
