The parish of Nossa Senhora do Livramento de Piumhy was founded in January 1803 and belonged to the town of Tamanduá. It was situated between the rivers Piuí and Ribeirão das Araras, 350 kilometres west of what would later become the provincial capital, Ouro Preto. In March 1839, it was placed under the jurisdiction of the newly founded Vila Nova de Formiga. In March 1841, it was elevated to the status of a vila and finally to that of a town in July 1868. Since July 1998, Piumhi (in its current spelling) has been an independent municipality.
The Postal Report (Relatório Postal) for the year 1886 indicates that the local post office was created in March 1843. For a long time, stamps were cancelled by hand, as shown by the examples from R. Koester’s Carimbologia XXXI and the José A. Junge collection:

A Freguesia de Nossa Senhora do Livramento de Piumhy foi fundada em janeiro de 1803 e fazia parte da Vila de Tamanduá. Estava situada entre os rios Piuí e Ribeirão das Araras, a 350 quilômetros a oeste da futura capital provincial, Ouro Preto. Em março de 1839, foi subordinada à recém-fundada Vila Nova de Formiga. Em março de 1841, foi elevada à categoria de vila e, finalmente, em julho de 1868, à de cidade. Desde julho de 1998, Piumhi (na grafia atual) é um município independente.
O Relatório Postal de 1886 indica que a agência dos correios no local foi criada em março de 1843. Por muito tempo, os selos foram carimbados à mão, como mostram os exemplares da Carimbologia XXXI de R. Koester e da coleção de José A. Junge:

Im März 1839 wurde sie der neu gegründeten Vila Nova de Formiga untergeordnet. Im März 1841 wurde sie zur Vila und im Juli 1868 schließlich zur Stadt erhoben. Seit Juli 1998 ist Piumhi (in der aktuellen Schreibweise) ein eigenständiger Município.
