Originally, this was a settlement of the indigenous Cayapo and Coroados peoples on the north bank of the River Pomba, 150 kilometres south of what would later become the provincial capital, Ouro Preto. In February 1718, it became the Freguesia de São Manoel do Pomba and was part of the Vila de Mariana. In October 1831, it was elevated to the status of a Vila, and in June 1858 it finally became the town of Pomba. Since December 1948, it has been the Município de Rio Pomba.
All sources agree that there has been a post office there since March 1829. Nova Monteiro states 5 March in Administrações e Agências Postais do Brasil Império (Brasil Filatélico/RJ, 1934–1935; reprinted by SPP 1994–1999), whilst Paula Sobrinho gives 25 March in História Postal de Minas Gerais (Belo Horizonte, 1997). The oldest postmark to date is PMG-1995a, which is listed in the RHM catalogue under P-MG-47:

This postmark was presumably soon rendered unusable, as stamps were subsequently cancelled by hand. The example below is taken from P. Ayres’ Catálogo de Carimbos Brasil-Império (S. Paulo, 1937, 1942), although the number of dashes beneath the place name varied:

Pomba railway station was inaugurated in July 1886 by the E. F. Leopoldina Railway Company as the terminus of the Guarany–Pomba Line. It was situated south of the river, and the line remained in operation until 1965. Today, the tracks have disappeared and the station building is used as a Masonic lodge.
There is some uncertainty and confusion regarding the existence of a railway station post office and its postmark, for two reasons. Firstly, there had already been a Pomba railway station post office operated by E.F. Leopoldina since December 1879, located just under 40 km further east in Pomba, which was later renamed Pombense and finally Sobral Pinto, and was administered by the Postal Directory in Rio until July 1881. Secondly, there was no railway station post office for the town Pomba until the end of 1886, and for the financial year 1886/1887, courier services between Guarany railway station and the town of Pomba were still being put out to tender:
This courier route no longer existed by 1888. It follows, therefore, that the postal service reached Pomba by rail by 1887 at the latest. As the River Pomba separated the railway station from the town centre, situated two kilometres further north, and there was probably no bridge at the time, it seems likely that there was also a post office at the station.

Originalmente, tratava-se de um assentamento dos povos indígenas das nações Cayapo e Coroados, na margem norte do rio Pomba, 150 quilômetros ao sul da futura capital provincial, Ouro Preto. Em fevereiro de 1718, tornou-se a Freguesia de São Manoel do Pomba e passou a fazer parte da Vila de Mariana. Em outubro de 1831, foi elevada à categoria de Vila e, finalmente, em junho de 1858, à de cidade de Pomba. Desde dezembro de 1948, ela faz parte do Município de Rio Pomba.
Todas as fontes concordam que havia uma agência dos correios no local desde março de 1829. Nova Monteiro indica, em Administrações e Agências Postais do Brasil Império (Brasil Filatélico/RJ, 1934–1935; reimpressão SPP 1994–1999), a data de 5 de março, enquanto Paula Sobrinho, em História Postal de Minas Gerais (Belo Horizonte, 1997), aponta 25 de março. O carimbo postal mais antigo registrado até o momento é o PMG-1995a, que recebeu no catálogo RHM o número P-MG-47:

Esse carimbo postal provavelmente ficou inutilizável logo em seguida, pois então, os selos passaram a ser obliterados manualmente. O exemplo abaixo foi extraído do Catálogo de Carimbos Brasil-Império, de P. Ayres (S. Paulo, 1937, 1942), sendo que o número de traços abaixo do nome da localidade era variável:

A estação de Pomba foi inaugurada em julho de 1886 pela E. F. Leopoldina, no final do Ramal Guarany–Pomba (ver mapa abaixo). Ela ficava ao sul do rio, e a linha permaneceu em operação até 1965. Hoje, os trilhos desapareceram e o prédio da estação é utilizado como loja maçônica.
Existe certa incerteza e confusão quanto à existência de uma agência dos correios na estação ferroviária e ao seu carimbo postal por dois motivos. Em primeiro lugar, já existia, desde dezembro de 1879, uma agência postal da E.F. Leopoldina a cerca de 40 km a leste, em Pomba — que mais tarde passou a se chamar Pombense e, por fim, Sobral Pinto —, administrada até julho de 1881 pela Diretoria dos Correios do Rio. Em segundo lugar, até o final de 1886 não havia agência postal na estação ferroviária da cidade de Pomba, e para o exercício fiscal de 1886/1887 ainda foram licitados serviços de correio por estafetas entre a estação de Guarany e a cidade de Pomba:
Essa linha de correio já não existia em 1888. Conclui-se, portanto, que os serviços postais chegaram a Pomba por via férrea, ao mais tardar, em 1887. Como o rio Pomba separava a estação do centro da cidade, localizado dois quilômetros mais ao norte, e provavelmente não havia ponte na época, é provável que houvesse também uma agência postal na estação.

Ursprünglich war dies eine Siedlung der Ureinwohner der Nationen Cayapo und Coroados am Nordufer des Pomba, 150 Kilometer südlich der späteren Provinzhauptstadt Ouro Preto. Im Februar 1718 wurde sie zur Freguesia de São Manoel do Pomba und gehörte zur Vila de Mariana. Im Oktober 1831 folgte der Aufstieg zur Vila und im Juni 1858 schließlich zur Stadt Pomba. Seit Dezember 1948 liegt diese im Município de Rio Pomba.
Alle Quellen sind sich einig, dass es dort seit März 1829 ein Postamt gab. Nova Monteiro schreibt in Administrações e Agencias Postaes do Brasil Imperio (Brasil Filatelico/RJ, 1934–1935; Nachdruck SPP 1994–1999) den 5. März, während Paula Sobrinho in História Postal de Minas Gerais (Belo Horizonte, 1997) den 25. März angibt. Der bisher älteste Poststempel ist PMG-1995a, der im RHM-Katalog unter P-MG-47 erfasst wurde:

Dieser Poststempel war vermutlich bald unbrauchbar, denn in der Folge wurden die Briefmarken per Hand entwertet. Das untere Beispiel wurde aus P. Ayres’ Catálogo de Carimbos Brasil-Império (S. Paulo, 1937, 1942) entnommen, wobei die Zahl der Striche unter dem Ortsnamen variabel war:

Der Bahnhof Pomba wurde im Juli 1886 von der Eisenbahngesellschaft E. F. Leopoldina am Ende der Strecke Guarany–Pomba eingeweiht (Abb. oben). Er lag südlich des Flusses und die Linie blieb bis 1965 in Betrieb. Heute sind die Gleise verschwunden und das Bahnhofsgebäude wird als Loge der Freimaurer genutzt.
Über das Vorhandensein eines Bahnhofspostamts und dessen Poststempel herrscht aus zwei Gründen etwas Unklarheit und Verwirrung. Erstens gab es bereits seit Dezember 1879 ein Pomba-Bahnhofspostamt der E.F. Leopoldina knapp 40 km weiter östlich, das später in Pombense und schließlich in Sobral Pinto umbenannt wurde und bis Juli 1881 von der Postdirektion in Rio verwaltet wurde. Zweitens gab es bis Ende 1886 kein Postamt für den Bahnhof der Stadt Pomba, und für das Geschäftsjahr 1886/1887 wurden noch Stafettendienste zwischen dem Bahnhof Guarany und der Stadt Pomba ausgeschrieben:
Diese Staffettenlinie existierte 1888 nicht mehr. Daraus folgt, dass die Post nach Pomba spätestens 1887 mit der Eisenbahn kam. Da der Fluss Pomba den Bahnhof von der zwei Kilometer weiter nördlich gelegenen Ortsmitte trennte und es damals wohl keine Brücke gab, liegt die Vermutung nahe, dass sich auch ein Postamt am Bahnhof befand.
