Pomba railway station was opened in February 1880 by the E. F. Leopoldina railway company as part of the cross-country line. It was situated approximately 40 km east of the town of Pomba and 200 km south-east of the provincial capital, Ouro Preto. From 1975 until its closure in 1996, the railway line was owned by Rede Ferroviária Federal S.A. (estacoesferroviarias.com.br). Today, the tracks are still in place and the station building most recently served as a snack bar and bus stop.
Around October 1882, the station was renamed Sobral Pinto, in memory of the doctor Luiz Sobral Pinto (1818–1882).
The area around the station was placed under the jurisdiction of the Município de Cataguases in August 1888 and has belonged to the Município de Astolfo Dutra since December 1938 and to the Distrito de Sobral Pinto since December 1961.
As reported by the press in Rio, a railway station post office was established in December 1879:
The post office was initially administered by the Postal Directorate in Rio de Janeiro and only came under the provincial administration of Minas Gerais in July 1881. It is thought that the name was changed to Pombense around this time to avoid confusion with the railway station in the town of Pomba (PMG-1996), which was under construction. It was not until April 1893 – well after the founding of the Republic – that the railway station post office was renamed Sobral Pinto, as recorded in the Postal Bulletin (Boletim Postal).
The oldest postmark to date is PMG-1999a, which was assigned No. 1406 in P. Ayres’ Catálogo de Carimbos Brasil-Império (São Paulo, 1937, 1942):

A estação de Pomba foi inaugurada em fevereiro de 1880 pela E. F. Leopoldina como parte da Linha de Ligação Transversal. Localizava-se a cerca de 40 km a leste da cidade de Pomba e a 200 km a sudeste da capital provincial, Ouro Preto. A linha ferroviária pertenceu à Rede Ferroviária Federal S.A. (estacoesferroviarias.com.br) de 1975 até seu desativamento em 1996. Hoje, os trilhos ainda existem e o prédio da estação serviu, mais recentemente, como lanchonete e ponto de ônibus.
Por volta de outubro de 1882, a estação foi renomeada como Sobral Pinto, em homenagem ao médico Luiz Sobral Pinto (1818-1882).
A área ao redor da estação foi transferida para o município de Cataguases em agosto de 1888 e, desde dezembro de 1938, pertence ao município de Astolfo Dutra; desde dezembro de 1961, ao distrito de Sobral Pinto.
Conforme divulgado pela imprensa do Rio, em dezembro de 1879 foi criada uma agência postal na estação ferroviária:
A agência postal foi inicialmente administrada pela Diretoria dos Correios do Rio de Janeiro e só passou a ser administrada pela administração provincial de Minas Gerais em julho de 1881. Presume-se que, por volta dessa época, tenha ocorrido a mudança do nome para Pombense, a fim de evitar confusões com a estação ferroviária da cidade de Pomba (PMG-1996), que estava em construção. Somente em abril de 1893, ou seja, algum tempo após a fundação da República, a agência postal da estação ferroviária passou a se chamar Sobral Pinto, conforme consta no Boletim Postal.
O carimbo postal mais antigo até então é o PMG-1999a, que recebeu o nº 1406 no Catálogo de Carimbos Brasil-Império, de P. Ayres (São Paulo, 1937, 1942):

Der Bahnhof Pomba wurde im Februar 1880 von der Eisenbahngesellschaft E. F. Leopoldina als Teil der Querverbindungslinie eröffnet. Er lag ca. 40 km östlich der Stadt Pomba und 200 km südöstlich der Provinzhauptstadt Ouro Preto. Die Bahnlinie gehörte von 1975 bis zu ihrer Stilllegung im Jahr 1996 der Rede Ferroviária Federal S.A. (estacoesferroviarias.com.br). Heute sind die Gleise noch vorhanden und das Bahnhofsgebäude diente zuletzt als Imbiss und Bushaltestelle.
Gegen Oktober 1882 wurde der Bahnhof in Sobral Pinto umbenannt, in Erinnerung an dem Arzt Luiz Sobral Pinto (1818-1882).
Das Areal um den Bahnhof wurde im August 1888 dem Município de Cataguases unterstellt und gehört seit Dezember 1938 zum Município de Astolfo Dutra, seit Dezember 1961 zum Distrito de Sobral Pinto.
Wie die Presse aus Rio bekannt gab, wurde im Dezember 1879 ein Bahnhofspostamt ins Leben gerufen:
Das Postamt wurde zunächst von der Postdirektion in Rio de Janeiro verwaltet und fiel erst im Juli 1881 unter die Provinzverwaltung von Minas Gerais. Vermutlich erfolgte um diese Zeit die Umbenennung in Pombense, um Verwechslungen mit dem sich im Bau befindlichen Bahnhof der Stadt Pomba (PMG-1996) zu vermeiden. Erst im April 1893, also weit nach Gründung der Republik, wurde das Bahnhofspostamt in Sobral Pinto umbenannt, wie aus dem Postbulletin (Boletim Postal) hervorgeht.
Der bisher älteste Poststempel ist PMG-1999a, der in P. Ayres‘ Catálogo de Carimbos Brasil-Império (S. Paulo, 1937, 1942) die Nr. 1406 erhielt:
