Other names: Aricuru, Arucurá
The former Freguesia de Nossa Senhora da Luz de Aricuru (also spelled Arucurá) belonged to the Vila de Breves; it was situated at the mouth of the Camaraipi River where it flows into Portel Bay, 290 km west of what would later become the provincial capital, Belém do Pará. In January 1758, it became the Vila de Portel, but lost this status in 1833 when it became the parish of Melgaço. Since September 1843, Portel has once again been an independent municipality. As is common with many places in Pará, the place name originates from Portugal: The small town of Portel in the Alentejo region (approx. 2,400 inhabitants) served as its namesake.
Three periods of operation for the local post office have been identified to date. The first of these began in March 1828, as recorded by Nova Monteiro in Administrações e Agências Postais do Brasil Império (Brasil Filatélico/RJ, 1934–5; Reprint SPP 1994–1999). We do not know when it closed, but in 1846 the Yearbook of Brazilian Politics, History and Statistics reported that it had reopened:

The second period of operation ended in April 1850, as reported by the press in Rio de Janeiro:

The third creation of the post office took place in March 1868, as R. Koester wrote in Carimbologia XXXIII. To date, no imperial postmark from Portel in the province of Pará has been found.
