Providência railway station was opened in July 1874 by the E. F. Leopoldina railway company (main line) in the municipality of Leopoldina. It is situated 280 km south-east of the provincial capital, Ouro Preto. The railway line was transferred to Rede Ferroviária Federal S.A. in 1975 and was closed in 1996. Since May 1899, the station has been situated in the district of the same name within the municipality of Leopoldina. The tracks are still in place and, until 2021, the station building housed a notary’s office and a post office.
As can be seen from the directory of imperial post offices (Tabella das Agências do Correio do Império, Rio de Janeiro, 1885), there has been a post office at the station since 1875, which was initially administered from Rio de Janeiro and came under the jurisdiction of Minas Gerais in July 1881. The oldest postmark is PMG-2065a (Fig. Marcio Duarte):

A estação da Providência foi inaugurada em julho de 1874 pela E. F. Leopoldina (Linha Tronco), no município de Leopoldina. Ela ficava a 280 km a sudeste de Ouro Preto, então capital da província. A linha ferroviária foi transferida para a Rede Ferroviária Federal S.A. em 1975 e foi desativada em 1996. Desde maio de 1899, a estação está localizada no distrito de mesmo nome, no município de Leopoldina. Os trilhos ainda existem e, até 2021, o prédio da estação abrigava um cartório e uma agência dos Correios.
Conforme consta na Tabela das Agências do Correio do Império (Rio de Janeiro, 1885), havia uma agência dos Correios na estação desde 1875, que inicialmente era administrada a partir do Rio de Janeiro e, em julho de 1881, passou a ser de competência de Minas Gerais. Der Bahnhof Providência („Vorsehung“) wurde im Juli 1874 von der Eisenbahngesellschaft E. F. Leopoldina (Hauptlinie) im Município de Leopoldina eröffnet. Er liegt 280 km südöstlich der Provinzhauptstadt Ouro Preto. Die Bahnlinie ging 1975 an die Rede Ferroviária Federal S.A. über und wurde 1996 stillgelegt. Seit Mai 1899 befindet sich der Bahnhof im gleichnamigen Distrikt der Gemeinde Leopoldina. Die Gleise sind noch vorhanden und bis 2021 beherbergte das Bahnhofsgebäude ein Notariat sowie ein Postamt.
Wie dem Verzeichnis der kaiserlichen Postämter (Tabella das Agencias do Correio do Imperio, Rio de Janeiro, 1885) zu entnehmen ist, gab es ein Postamt am Bahnhof seit 1875, das zunächst von Rio de Janeiro aus verwaltet wurde und im Juli 1881 unter die Zuständigkeit von Minas Gerais fiel.
