Piraúba station was opened in July 1886 by the E. F. Leopoldina railway company (Caratinga Line). It was located in the municipality of Pomba, 190 kilometres south-east of the provincial capital, Ouro Preto. From 1975 until the line was closed in 1994, the railway line belonged to Rede Ferroviária Federal S.A. (estacoesferroviarias.com.br). Today, the tracks have been removed and the station building is used as a community cultural centre.
The area around the station was incorporated into the district of Piraúba in June 1890, which became part of the municipality of Rio Pomba in December 1948. Piraúba has been an independent municipality since December 1953. The name, derived from the Tupi-Guarani language, means ‘golden fish’.
As stated in the Postal Report (Relatório Postal) for the year 1886, there had been a railway station there since October 1886. This is confirmed by the press in Rio de Janeiro:

Ela ficava no município de Pomba, a 190 quilômetros a sudeste da capital da província, Ouro Preto. De 1975 até o fechamento da linha em 1994, a ferrovia pertenceu à Rede Ferroviária Federal S.A. (estacoesferroviarias.com.br). Hoje, os trilhos foram removidos e o prédio da estação é utilizado como centro cultural do município.
A área ao redor da estação foi incorporada ao distrito de Piraúba em junho de 1890, que passou a pertencer ao município de Rio Pomba a partir de dezembro de 1948. Desde dezembro de 1953, Piraúba é um município independente. O termo, de origem tupi-guarani, significa “peixe dourado”.
Conforme consta no Relatório Postal de 1886, havia ali uma estação ferroviária desde outubro de 1886. Isso é confirmado pela imprensa do Rio de Janeiro:
